Place two lights at about eye level on either side of your face to minimise shadows. Soften harsh light with white sheets.

How to Sign a Passport Photo and Who Can Be a Guarantor?

Unless you're eligible for an Australian passport renewal, you will need a referee or a guarantor.

If you apply online while living in Australia, you will need a referee. A referee doesn't have to sign anything but should be ready to confirm your identity if contacted.

If you apply in-person while in Australia, you'll need a guarantor to sign section 11 of your application form. Your sponsor must also certify the back of a passport photo by writing “This is a true photo of [your full name]” and signing it in black ink.

Your guarantor or referee should:

Be an Australian citizen over the age of eighteen and have known you for more than one year.
Not be related to you in any way, have a de facto relationship with you, or live at your address.

Your application will require the following details of your guarantor or referee:

Full name.
Contact number.
Australian passport details, or the address as found on the electoral roll for the last 12 months (or professional details for overseas guarantors).
